Planner’s Report – Pete Bartlett
17 brave souls entered Firestone Copse between 6.00-6.30. The small field of competitors meant that registration was relaxed and straight forward even with the restricted light. Although it wasn’t completely dark until 6.45 I decided to allow some competitors to start in twilight.
Dan Williams predictively smashed the course in under an hour, but this time without the use of a ‘million candle watt’ headlamp, leaving Chris Pritchett and Glyn Williams to battle it out for second place. Chris just nudged it by 25 seconds but had taken a dramatic dive somewhere on route handing in a card splattered with mud.
There were impressive performances by the Luckman and Downer families, along with Christine and Mark; venturing off the main tracks to find the more challenging control sites. Mark said “If I hadn’t fallen over and re-adjusted my headlamp 20 times I would have found a lot more!”.
On the short course the Evans family were victorious, Millie & Jasper warmed up around the car park while dad Richard planned their route. Sue and Lisa, who’d never done orienteering before, set off early with no plan at all! Whilst Dan Cox with 4 year old William went for a ‘whoosh in wellies’. The three diverse groups on the short course found the majority of the controls and returned within the allotted time. Although the field was small, those that took part appeared to have enjoyed themselves.
