Thank you to everyone who participated at Golden Hill despite everything that the weather could throw at us. Andrew and I had enjoyed putting the controls out on Saturday evening, with a rising moon, warm and dry, and then by the time we had collected the controls in on Sunday the rain had stopped (and the wind had dropped a bit). Sadly we got the rain and gales in between. At one point Andrew was hanging on to the gazebo over the start/finish area to stop it blowing away whilst I went to fetch some strong ropes to tie it down. Control KL, in a shallow depression, was dry on Saturday evening, had a couple of little puddles on Sunday morning but the control was surrounded by two inches of water by the time we collected it in! However, I hope that you were still able to enjoy the challenge.

The one issue that we hadn’t anticipated was for people to misread or misremember the next control number and therefore go, quite literally, off course! Apologies to those who had a much shorter run than we had intended. The feedback in general was that people liked the format of the technical quiz courses (but may be not the hard questions set by Andrew – that was deliberate to get you to visit more controls!) so if we were to do it again we would hope for drier weather allowing you to make a note of the next control number. Definitely not an option in the rain yesterday! The big advantage of the format is that it allows a small area like Golden Hill to be criss-crossed several times without using multiple printed maps.
