Island School Orienteering Event
Wednesday 13th May 2026
The annual Schools’ orienteering competition took place at Martin’s Wood, Newchurch on Wednesday 13th May. The event was organised by Wight Orienteers and 35 competitors from 6 primary schools took part. Defending champions Carisbrooke were narrowly beaten by Queensgate, with Greenmount taking third place. Newchurch, Priory School and Newport CofE also did well, completing the three courses in very respectable times.
The date of the next event will be circulated to all primary schools early next year.
More schools would be welcome to join in this very enjoyable event.
Orienteering activities support the Outdoor and Adventurous Activity targets of the curriculum and the event can be planned into your schools PE programme. The sport blends physical activity with cognitive challenges. Your students spatial awareness, map-reading skills, critical problem-solving and teamwork skills are trained, alongside building their physical stamina and self-confidence in an outdoor environment.
Schools enter is free via Tony Harris – Schools Sport Organiser.
There are several permanent courses on the Island to develop your skills outside school time.
