Entry fee is £4 for members (WightO or British Orienteering), £3 for under 21s, and £5 for others. You will get a specially produced street map showing the control points you need to find. If you’re not a WightO member, do consider joining.

Location The Falcon, Shanklin
Registration
Between 1800 and 1845
Start Times Between 1800 and 1900

Groups or pairs are welcome. All competitors take part at their own risk, and because of our insurance any under 16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

For the event, you’ll need:

  • Running gear (easy surfaces: tarmac, gravel, a bit of grass)
  • A way to keep track of time
  • One of the following to register than you have visited the controls:
    (a) A phone with the MapRun app installed (android | ios)
    (b) Optionally: for Garmin watches the MapRunG Garmin IQ Connect App
    (c) Optionally: for Apple watches the MapRunA Watch App
    (d) OR a pen/pencil to fill in answers on a cluesheet!
  • A compass is not essential!
  • Headtorch recommended but also not essential – most is streetlit but there will be dark spots and you will find it easier to read the map!

This a public race – everyone is welcome. You can race, run or walk as you wish. As these are low key local events, they are particularly suitable for people who have never tried orienteering before, so come and say hi!

Format

You will have 60 minutes to collect as many points as possible. Using the map provided, find points in whichever order you like, collecting 10 points for each point you visit. In some events controls will be worth differing numbers of points, giving some additional tactics in deciding where to go. This one is simple though. Everything is 10 points. If you’re late, the penalty is 1 penalty point for every 3 seconds (or part of 3 seconds) late back (so you’ll lose 20 points if you are a minute late back etc.).

  1. Register your name and pay on the day (cash or BACS bank transfer)
  2. You will receive the map, clue sheet, and a timing device. Write down your name on the clue sheet. When you are ready to start, place your timing device in the “start” block. The official and registration can show you how to do this. As soon as you finish place your timing device in the “finish” block to stop your time.
  3. Find controls in whichever order you like. At each location you’ll either register you’ve been there using GPS via the Map Run app, or you’ll fill in the answer to the question on the clue sheet to prove that you’ve been there.
  4. Return to the registration point within 60 minutes to avoid time penalties. If you don’t want to be out for a full 60 minutes, you can come back earlier.
  5. Report back to the registration desk after you’ve finished and hand in your clue sheet to be marked if you’ve used pen+paper, or upload your Map Run trace if you have used the app. You can collect your map back after it has been marked and score recorded. Full final results will be posted on the website as soon as possible.

Social

Stay around, have a drink, talk about your routes, and get to know each other!

Safety

A headtorch is highly recommended as well as bright clothing.

Please note: Participants who are not members of British Orienteering are not covered by British Orienteering’s public liability insurance. By entering this event, you acknowledge that you are taking part at your own risk. For example, if you were to accidentally injure a member of the public or damage property during the event, you would not be covered. If you’re not a WightO member, do consider joining.

Why the entry fee?

We pay British Orienteering £1.85 per entry for members, £0.60 for under-21s and £2.80 for non-members, which primarily covers insurance. We pay around £0.50 per entry for use of the Map Run platform and up to £0.50 to print your map. Which leaves around £1 to go towards club costs such as maintaining the timing equipment.
